Project Complete: Weir removal & watercourse realignment

Contracted by SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency), McGowan Environmental Engineering has successfully delivered a weir removal and watercourse realignment project on the Bronie Burn by Ellon in Aberdeenshire. Completed over a five-week period this summer, the project will improve passage for wild fish in the Bronie Burn, with the weir removal helping to opening up the upper reaches of the catchment.

Speaking about the project, Sam Hesling, Environment Contracts Manager at McGowan, commented:

“The successful delivery of the Bronie Burn project formed a significant milestone of McGowan’s summer work programme. Fundamental to this successful project was all parties coming together to foster a collaborative approach and ‘can do’ attitude to the work. As a company we are committed to environmental restoration and will carry the experience of delivering on the Bronie forward with us into 2023 and beyond.”

The Bronie Burn project was commissioned by SEPA with funding from the Water Environment Fund (WEF). SEPA administers the Fund on behalf of the Scottish Government, working in partnership with local authorities, land and structure owners, fishery trusts and conservation bodies to deliver an annual programme of river restoration projects.
