About Sam

I have worked at McGowans since 2020 and spend most of my time now managing the procurement and commercial aspects of our contracts and running various commercial and quality aspects of the business.

I worked on farms and estates in my youth and early working life, going on to become a chartered engineer and chartered environmentalist. For the last 20 years I have worked on the delivery of wind, hydro, construction and environmental projects.

Some of the locations we have the privilege of working in are truly spectacular. So much so, that we used to joke that we should sell the empty seats in our pickups to tourists, who would be treated to an unforgettable tour of some of the most amazing places Scotland has to offer!

Highlight at McGowans – river restoration in Iceland was pretty cool. But the small things are what really motivates me: the details in and around what we do; the day-to-day interactions with people; the small wins amongst the setbacks.

I enjoy home life with a young family, gardening and playing music. I love the outdoors with a particular passion for mountain and hill running.

Since 2013 I have been a trustee of a local community charity forest trust, the largest of its kind in Scotland. I regularly volunteer to support their activities and have held chair and vice chair positions.
